Club History

Brown Trout (Salmo trutta)

Keynsham Angling Association was founded on 2nd July 1903 after a conversation between a 'few local anglers' who decided an association should be formed amongst the many anglers of Keynsham. Membership was initially restricted to Keynsham residents. The press cuttings below contain details of the original committee members and of the initial meetings and events. Anyone in possession stories, clippings, photos or memoirs of the Association through the years should feel free to contact the club - details on the 'Contact' page. All input would be gratefully received in an ongoing attempt to chronicle Keynsham Angling Association's first 100 years of existence.

The Novice's Vow

Written by President W. Pepperell Pitt in the early 1930s, all novices were required to sign a copy of this vow on admission to the Honourable Society of Anglers. How the times have changed!

I PLEDGE by everything most dear
By rod and creel and fishing gear
By listless pool and rippling stream
By gamesome trout and portly bream
NEVER at any time to poach
Another's waters, NOR encroach
Upon his baited swim.

I SWEAR
I will not any means unfair
Employ NOR e'en make a dish
Retain an under-limit fish
Except for bait; NOR seek a reason
For taking fish when out of season.

I VOW to skirt all crops and grass
To close all gates through which I pass
And lest he from my side should roam
To leave the faithful hound at home
To clear all litter from the banks
And earn thereby the farmers' thanks,
Remembering whatever I may
Bring out with me TO take away
NEITHER to friend or foe will I
About my catches brag or lie
BUT do to the fraternity
As I would have them do to me

These rules inviolate I PRAY
To keep unto my dying day.
